Background
... 12 rectangles 2½˝ x 4½˝
... 4 squares 2½˝ x 2½˝

Blue
... 12 squares 2½˝ x 2½˝

... 1 square 4½˝ x 4½˝

Piecing the Block
Step 1. Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of 2½˝ blue square. Layer blue square and 2½˝ x 4½˝ background rectangle, right sides together, aligning raw edges. Sew directly on top of drawn line. Cut away excess fabric ¼˝ from seamline. Open and press. Repeat for other end of rectangle (Diagram I). Make 4 pieced rectangles.

Step 2. Referring to Diagram II, sew blue 2½˝ squares, 2½˝ x 4½˝ rectangles, and 4½˝ floral print square together to make 9-patch. Make 1.

Step 3. Sew 2½˝ background squares to each side of pieced rectangle to make pieced top/bottom strip (Diagram III). Sew to top and bottom of 9-patch.

Step 4. Sew 2½˝ x 4½˝ background rectangles to each side of pieced rectangle to make side strips (Diagram IV). Sew side strips to each side to complete Square in A Star Block.
