... 1 strip 2" x 18"
... 4 rectangles 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" (Piece A)
... 4 rectangles 2" x 3 1/2" (Piece C)

... 8 squares 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" (Piece B)

... 1 strip 2" x 18"
... 8 squares 2" x 2" (Piece D)

Piecing the block
Step 1. Referring to Diagram IA, sew Background 18" strip to Red 18" strip. Cut 8 segments 2" wide.

Stitch together 2 segments to make four-patch (Diagram IB). Make 4.

Diagram I-B

Step 2. Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of navy 3 1/2˝ square. Layer square and 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" Background rectangle. Sew directly on top of drawn line. Cut away excess fabric 1/4" from seamline. Press seam allowance. Repeat for other end of rectangle (Diagram II). Make 4.

Step 3. Referring to Diagram IIIA, make center four-patch using Red 2" x 2" squares. Make 1.

Diagram III-A

Sew Red 2" squares to each side of Background 2" x 3 1/2" rectangle to make pieced strips (Diagram IIIB). Make 2.

Referring to Diagram IIIC, sew center pieced square. Make 1.

Diagram III-C

Step 4. Referring to Diagram IV, sew together 4-patches, pieced rectangles and pieced square to make Pathways Block.
