... Cut 2 squares 4 1/4" x 4 1/4"; cut twice diagonally to make 8 quarter-square triangles |
Piecing the Block
Step 1 - Pieced Square Unit
On wrong side of 3 7/8" cream square, draw diagonal line with the marking tool of your choice. Layer square with 3 7/8" medium blue print square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Press open to make pieced squares (Diagram I). Make 4 medium blue print/cream 3 7/8" pieced-squares and 4 dark blue print and light pink 3" pieced squares.

Step 2. - Pieced Flying Geese Unit
Using Diagram II as a guide, sew 4 1/4" dark blue quarter-square triangles to each light pink side of 3" pieced square. Sew 3 7/8" cream half-square triangles to short sides of pieced triangle to make pieced Flying Geese unit. Make 4 total.

Step 3. - 4-Patch Square Unit
Using Diagram III as a guide, sew 4 identically cut 3 1/2" floral print squares together. (Note: Turn squares to form kaleidoscope design, before sewing together.) Make 1 total. (Optional: Substitute 6 1/2" floral print for 4-Patch Square unit.)

Step 4. Referring to Assembly Diagram for unit placement, sew pieced units together to make rows. Sew rows together to complete Jack-in-the-box Block.
