A gentle breeze carries the sound of birds and the scent of flowers into your room as you prepare to greet another perfect spring day. RJR's Everything But the Kitchen Sink collection of 1930's reproduction fabrics gives this quilt its old fashioned charm.
Planning, Cutting, and Marking We instruct you to add the flowering vines after completing all piecing, but feel free to appliqué at whatever point in construction you like, keeping in mind all seam allowances.
Piecing the Blocks and Sawtooth Squares
Step 2. On wrong side of white 2 7/8" square, draw diagonal line with marking tool of your choice. Referring to Diagram II, place white square on assorted print 2 7/8" square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Press open to make sawtooth squares. Make 140 total.

Quilt Top Assembly and Appliqué
Note: Refer to Assembly Diagram for following steps.
Step 3. Arrange and sew 5 rows using 13 assorted Nine-Patch Blocks and 12 white 3 1/2" squares. Sew rows together to make quilt center. Stitch yellow small print 1 1/2" x 20" strips to sides; trim even with top and bottom. Stitch remaining yellow 1 1/2" x 20" strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides. Sew white 14" half-square triangles to opposite sides of quilt center. Repeat for remaining sides. Trim quilt center to 24 1/2" x 24 1/2". Stitch yellow 2" x 32" strips to sides; trim even. Stitch remaining yellow 2" x 32" strips to top/bottom; trim even.
Step 4. Arrange and sew strip using 5 Nine-Patch Blocks and 4 white 3 1/2" squares. Make 2. Arrange and sew strip using 5 white 3 1/2" squares and 4 blocks. Make 2. Using 1 of each arrangement, make side nine-patch border. Make 2; sew to sides of quilt. In same manner, make 4 strips using 7 blocks and 6 white squares each, and 2 strips using 7 white squares and 6 blocks each. Sew 3 strips together as shown to make top/bottom border. Make 2; sew to top/bottom.
Step 5. Stitch yellow 1 1/2" x 50" strips to sides; trim even. Repeat for top/bottom. Sew white 6" x 56" strips to sides; trim even. Repeat for top/bottom. Sew yellow 2" x 62" strips to sides; trim even. Repeat for top/bottom. Stitch white 5" x 65" strips to sides; trim even. Stitch white 4" x 68" strips to top/bottom; trim even.
Step 6. Sew strip of 34 sawtooth squares (reversing direction at center) for side border. Make 2; sew to sides of quilt. Sew strip of 32 sawtooth squares, reversing direction at center. Make 2. Sew white 2 1/2" squares to ends of strips; sew strips to top/bottom. Stitch white 4 1/2" x 80" strips to sides; trim even. Repeat for top/bottom.
Step 7. To cut 1 1/4" x 5 3/4 yds. bias strip, start with green small floral 18" square and refer to How to Make Continuous Bias. To make stems and vines, fold bias strip in half, wrong sides together (see Diagram III). Stitch 1/4" from raw edge. Trim seam allowance to 1/8". Press tube flat, centering seam allowance on back so raw edge isn't visible from front. Using 3/8" bias bar makes pressing faster and easier. Cut strip into 4 lengths of 6" and 4 lengths of 45".
Step 8. Position 6" stem on each white corner triangle. Using appliqué method of choice, appliqué in place. Add Template A-C fabrics and appliqué in place. Position 45" vine along each corner of inner white border. Appliqué in place. Add Template A-C fabrics and appliqué in place.

Quilting and Finishing
Step 9. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Phyllis machine quilted diagonal lines through the Nine-Patch Blocks. The white 3" squares feature small quatrefoils, and the appliqués are outline stitched. Quilt center large white triangles are stitched in 1/2" concentric design lines. Yellow borders and sawtooth squares are stitched in the ditch, and white borders feature meandering vines, feathered triangles and scallops, and outlined floral vines.
Step 10. Bind quilt with white fabric.
