CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS
|
Cream background square ... One 13 1/2" square (trimmed to 12 1/2" afterTemplate A pieces have been appliquéd in place) |
Template A: ... Green ... 8 ... Light purple.. 8 ... Dark purple .. 4 |
In addition to fabric required for the block, you will need lightweight fusible interfacing.
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
FUSIBLE APPLIQUÉ METHOD (If fusible appliqué is not desired, use technique of choice to appliqué pieces in place.)
Step 1. Using a fine line permanent pen, trace Template A onto smooth side of fusible interfacing (rough side is the fusible side). Cut out interfacing section of "bead" approximately 1/2" from line. Place interfacing drawing on appropriate fabric with fusible side against right side of fabric. The smooth side of interfacing is on top. Pin in center of Template A piece. Do not press with iron.
Step 2. Using an open toe sewing machine foot, and a short straight stitch length, sew slightly to the outside of interfacing drawn "solid" line. (If sewn directly on the line, the finished piece will be smaller than required. Sewing slightly to the outside of the drawn line allows room for turning the fabric right side out. See Diagram I) Trim each piece to scant 1/4" beyond sewn line. Clip curves.

Step 3. Pull fusible interfacing away from fabric and make a slit through interfacing only (See Diagram II). Carefully turn right side out, gently pushing out seamed edges from inside (use a toothpick to help with this process). Finger-press seam edges. Do not press with iron.

Step 4. Finger-press cream background square in half lengthwise, crosswise, and diagonally (See Diagram III & III-A). Using fold as placement guide, position Template A piece in place. Using pressing cloth, press piece to secure it in place.

Step 5. Using monofilament thread, use either a blanket stitch or zig-zag stitch along edge to appliqué pieces into place. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 for each Template A piece. (see Fusible Appliqué lesson)
