Frequently Asked Questions:

1. I'm having trouble sewing Template A to the completed pieced arc units. Any suggestions?

    First, make sure that you have trimmed the pieced arc units as described in the pattern.

    Second, you may use match points on both Template A and the pieced arc unit. Mark match points on wrong side of the corners of both Template A and the pieced arc unit in the following manner. Using see-through acrylic ruler, make cross hairs in each corner by drawing a short line 1/4” from each raw edge at corner. To mark match point in the center of each piece, fold them both lengthwise and widthwise and mark a match point 1/4˝ in from the edge in the middle of each side.

     Once the match points are marked, you may line up Template A and a pieced arc unit on the match points at the center and the ends. Pin in place, and stitch. Hopefully, the match points will help you keep the seams correctly aligned.

2. How many rings do I need for a King Size quilt?

    You will need 6 rings x 6 rings (100˝ x 100˝) for a King size quilt.

3. My arcs are not fitting correctly with the squares. What can I do?

    There are a number of reasons that the arcs and squares might not fit correctly. Here are some things to check:

    - Check that your foundations copied correctly and are the right size.

    - Trim the foundations as described in the pattern (Diagram VII-A).

    - Insure that the fabric strips are each the right size. (Look at an unsewn arc; measure each section, and make sure the sewn arc measures the same.)

    - Double check the size of your squares.

    - Make sure you are sewing an exact 1/4˝ seam.

    - See recommendations for sewing arcs in #1 above.

poor instructions
This is my second dbl wedding ring. I find the instructions inadequate as far as sewing the arcs to the end squares. There are much easier ways of doing this than this. I appreciate the foundation piecing.

The Double Wedding Ring quilt is an advanced skill level pattern, and as such, presumes precise piecing skills, curved piecing skills, and knowledge of how to stitch partial seams. This design is a classic, and has enjoyed popularity for many years - I congratulate you for beginning this rewarding quilt!

sewing arcs to squares
I am having a very hard time sewing the arcs to the squares. Is there any visuals on how to do this or detailed instructions? I really don't feel that these "instructions" are complete, or it would explain/show how this is done. I'm fairly new to quilting/sewing but thoroughly enjoy it, I have this quilt promised to my brother-in-law and new sister-in-law. Thank you for your help!

Full patterning instructions for the vintage Double Wedding Ring quilt are only available in the size shown, but you may choose to add rings as needed to make the quilt in your desired size.

made footballs wrong size and need to adjust corner squares
I made the mistake if just printing the templates and not paying attention to the sizing. I have already made may arcs and my footballs. I did my four square patches and realized as I went to put the first row together that the squares were for the correct size templates and my footballs are too small. Any suggestions on what size the four square patches should be?

Correct Sizing of Templates
"Templates are the correct size when horizontal and vertical lines measure one inch" Just in case your computer autosizes to fit the paper on which it prints, the directions are telling you to print out the template and measure those cross hairs. If they are not exactly one inch, you need to make adjustments to your printer settings - generally, de-select the "auto-fit and rotate" option to print the template at 100%. Good luck with the quilt!

Template
Just getting started on the quilt, my neice is getting married next fall. Their is a note about the Template Size Key( after printing, templates will be correct size when horizontal and vertical lines measures one inch). I don't understand what this means, can someone explain it to me?

combine this pattern with Roxanne's directions
I recommend that anyone wanting to make double wedding ring quilt to use the McCall's pattern for the paper-pieced double wedding ring but then use Roxanne Carter's directions/method http://www.quiltin gwithroxanne.com/index.htm. Her method is simply to put it together with diagonal rows. She explained it to me in about five minutes and it makes this quilt very simple and a pleasure to put together. If she doesn't show the pattern on her website, just send her an email and ask for the directions. The minimal cost that she wants for the pattern/directions will save you no end of time, honestly.

I FINISHED!!
My sister helped me over the phone on this one. I don't know if this is the Roxanne method or not but...when attaching the "footballs" to the centers alternate the placement so that the football are attached to the top of block 1 and the bottom of block 2, also alternate right and left. When you are ready to sew the rows together you have a long "S" pattern rather than arcs and valleys to deal with. This is the most difficult quilt I have ever tried (quilting about 8 years) and an thrilled to finish, and YES it is as beautiful as the picture. My son is in the military and getting Married this week and I can't wait to send it to him.

If you search for Roxanne Carter on the web she is very easy to find. I found her website, quiltingwithroxanne.com, very interesting and she has many beautiful quilts to admire, including her version of the double wedding ring.

Roxanne Carters Instructions
I too would love to find these instructions. I just can not master sewing this pattern in rows. From my understainding, Roxannne Carter's method details how to sew in blocks. Any information to point us towards these directions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

tame the fear
when I see a complicated pattern thant may give me problems, I reduce the size of it by 25 or 50 %and make it til I am comfortable with the steps and then use the blocks for doll items. that way no waste.

Glad to hear
I am really glad to hear that someone has finished this quilt. I was so frustrated with it that I made a different quilt for our son's wedding. Told them they may get this one for their 5/10 anniversary. The 120 arcs I finished are sitting in a box, in a closet, so they are out of sight. I will check out Roxanne Carter's method. Thank you.

Fabric is forgiving
It's not easy to get the corners to fit and the clamshell to sew together properly, but fabric is pretty fluid, so I've been able to "convince" the corners to fit! Wish we could post finished projects, I'd love to see Joanneaxt's finished quilt! Still struggling with mine, so many little pieces, but it'll look great by their 10th anniversary!

Finished!!
My daughter's mother-in-law and I worked on and finished a king-size double wedding ring quilt from this pattern in time for the wedding. We used this pattern but followed assembly instructions from Roxanne Carter. So much easier - we would not have had any hair left otherwise. Roxanne's method is to make 'clamshell' blocks and assemble the quilt diagonally. This made it a fun project!!

Thank you for the pictures. I made sure that my templates printed properly. I have 120 arcs made. Son's wedding is in Oct. When I add the second arc they do not fit/lay flat.

Oh and make sure you printer is set at Print Actual Size. NOT SCALE TO FIT. If you have it on scale to fit it will come out wrong.

Arcs
Have you tried folding the arcs and the footballs to get a center line? After you find the center pin it. Now pin the both ends. Now pin the centers between your pins and so on until you have at least 8 pins in place. I had no problems with the pattern.

attach arcs to A
we were having trouble with the arcs and 'footballs' (template A) too. Found that clipping the paper pieces (do not clip fabric) made it easier to attach. Sewing with the football on the bottom and the arc on top, you can see the stitching line. Forging ahead, step by step!
