Cutting Instructions

(cut in order listed)
White
   2 strips 4½˝ x 16½˝
   2 rectangles 4½˝ x 8½˝
   8 squares 2 7/8˝ x 2 7/8˝
Dark green
   4 squares 2 7/8˝ x 2 7/8˝
Light green
   4 squares 2 7/8˝ x 2 7/8˝
   4 strips 1˝ x 2½˝
4 assorted brights—cut from each:
   1 Template A
Light yellow
   4 Template B

Other Materials
¼ yd. paper-backed fusible web
4 assorted bright buttons, 3/8-5/8˝ (optional)

Piecing the Block

1. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of white 2 7/8˝ square. Referring to Diagram I, place marked square on dark green 2 7/8˝ square, right sides together. Sew ¼˝ seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Open and press to make 2 pieced squares. Make 8. In same manner, make 8 pieced squares using light green and white 2 7/8˝ squares.



2. Place light green 1˝ x 2½˝ strip on light green/white pieced square, right sides together, aligning raw edges (Diagram II). Sew together using ½˝ seam allowance. Trim seam allowance to ¼˝. Open and press to complete stem square. Make 4.



3. Referring to Diagram III, sew 4 rows using 8 dark green/white pieced squares, 4 stem squares, and 4 light green/white pieced squares. Sew rows together to make 1 large pieced square.



4. Sew white 8½˝ rectangles to sides of large pieced square (Diagram IV). Sew white 16½˝ strips to top and bottom.



5. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for paper-backed fusible web. Trace Templates A-B (download here) on paper side of fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut out on drawn lines.



6. Finger-press pieced square in half on both length and width; use folds as placement guides. Position A and B shapes in alphabetical order (Diagram V). Fuse in place. Edge-stitch using machine blanket stitch (Diagram VI). Optional: Tack a button to center of each flower.
