Planning, Cutting, and Marking
Mary Jobe Mason has designed an elegant Christmas wall hanging that is easy to make from quick-cut squares, triangles, and strips. As Mary says, "The trick to this pattern is in the placement of dark and light colors. The more shades of dark and light greens you have, the better the overall look."
To achieve the interesting contrasts in the quilt, lay out the triangles for the wreath blocks and corner blocks on a flat surface, a feltboard, or a design wall, if you have one. This allows you to plan exactly where each triangle goes for the best effect.
Triangles for the quilt are quarter-square triangles. Fabric is cut in squares, then cut diagonally from corner to corner in both directions like an "X". The resulting four triangles are then combined with other triangles and sewn back together to form new pieced squares.

QUILT TOP ASSEMBLY
Piecing the Blocks
Step 1. Referring to Diagram I for placement of individual pieces, lay triangles and squares on a flat surface to construct the pattern shown.

Step 2. Sew together individual triangles into small pieced squares, as shown in Diagram II. Make 72 pieced squares for Wreath Block.

Step 3. Using Diagram I, piece together squares to make 10 rows. Beginning at top, sew rows together to complete Wreath Block.
Step 4. For Corner Block, make 4 pieced squares as shown in Diagram III, and join to make block. Make 4 Corner Blocks
Putting It All Together
Step 5. Sew a gold strip to each side of wreath block. Trim strips even with top and bottom of quilt. Sew a gold strip to top and bottom of block. Trim strips even with sides of quilt. (See Assembly Diagram).

Step 6. Sew an ivory print strip to each side of quilt. Trim even with top and bottom of quilt. Sew a corner block to one end of each remaining ivory strip. Pin strips to top and bottom of quilt, marking placement of remaining corner blocks, allowing for 1/4" seam allowance. Remove strips, trim to proper length, and attach remaining corner blocks. Sew pieced strips to top and bottom of quilt.
Quilting and Finishing
Step 7. Layer, baste and quilt. Hand or machine quilt a diagonal grid design over wreath, and quilt design in borders.
