How long I've been quilting... I guess I’ve been quilting as long as I have been helping my wife pick out fabrics at the many quilt shops from Atlanta to Maine to California. Our vacations always include searching out the local quilt shops. We like the regional differences in fabrics and patterns. We even visited several quilt shops while we were in Australia. The quilt for this contest, ‘Mountain Flight’, is my first attempt at drawing/designing, transferring to fabric, cutting out all of the pieces airbrushing the fabric and putting it all together. It was a wedding present for our son.

I began quilting because... I am a ‘tinkerer’ everything interests me. I enjoy painting (acrylics on canvas) and I enjoy woodworking too. I scratch build model airplanes from all eras.designing

My quilting style is... My style is inventive. If it works in a design I will use it. I don’t think I can say I use just one style. If it looks good and is balanced – then I will use it.

Other quilt design contests... This is my first ever quilt contest!

People who inspired me... I give all of the credit to my wife. I think together we make a good team together. We talk about designs and things we see and then I come up with a way to put it one paper or a quilt!

I draw my inspiration from... Mostly from the science fiction I have read and the artist which illustrate the book covers, also, the art of the masters and several Japanese artists from the past. Quite a mixture – but it works for me.

My Favorite techniques... Raw edge applique – because I can create many styles and texture just using the different fabrics.

Colors or fabrics I'm attracted to... Not really, the drawing or design dictates which colors or patterns will work for a particular piece.

fabric possibilitiesMy fabric stash... Whatever I can borrow from my wife’s closet – she has a rather extensive collection of colors and patterns. I like all colors and enjoy seeing how they work with each other.

My other hobbies and interests... I am just learning to turn wood on a lathe, and I enjoy painting something that catches my eye.

I entered Quilt Design Star™ 2012 because... My wife saw the contest on your website and suggested that we enter the Mountain Flight quilt. We had already sent it to our son as his wedding gift and had to get him to photograph it for us. So it was a stroke of luck that we sent it in.

What you should know about me… I’m just a regular guy, thinking about retirement. I love to travel and there is still a lot of the world to see.

I would also like to share... I am enjoying learning about quilts and quilt making.

Great Design. I love the way you have used color. It gave me the impression of the sunrise over the mountains with a pond and green grass around the barn. Good luck in the next challenge. lola
