How long I've been quilting... I’ve been a quilter for five years.

I began quilting because... I have always wanted to learn to quilt; when our local arts council (Henry County Arts Council) presented a beginner’s class in 2007 I took advantage of the opportunity. Janice Knepley, a local quilter, was the very patient teacher of the class. Quilting quickly became a passion for me. Thanks, Janice!

My quilting style is... As a relatively new quilter, I’m not sure I’ve found my quilting voice yet. I’ve enjoyed using all kinds of fabrics from batiks to brights, and civil war prints to depression era as well as more modern prints. Whether working from a pattern or creating my own design I try to create a secondary pattern with color, often using many shades and tints of the same hue. I want to become more improvisational and try many styles, including raw edge applique and modern quilting. I’m always up for a challenge.

Other quilt design contests I've entered... I entered the 2010 Quilt Design Star contest but was not a finalist.

People who inspired me... I’m inspired by both my mother and grandmother who were accomplished needleworkers, although not quilters. My mother taught me to sew, knit, cross stitch and do needlepoint, and my grandmother created beautiful works of art with those same skills. I have their work displayed in my home, including a needlepoint chair my grandmother made which sits in my quilt “studio” and inspires me.

I draw my inspiration from... My imagination is sparked by things I see in my everyday life. When you become a quilter you suddenly see patterns everywhere, and when you combine those with the beautiful color combinations we see in nature, you’ve got a winning combination. I’m also inspired by attending local quilt shows, reading quilt publications and the many quilting blogs and by my quilting buddies. We try to get together every month or so and seeing their work helps me progress in mine.

My Favorite techniques... Foundation paper piecing is my favorite. I love the accuracy it gives you and the sharp points. I also enjoy fusible applique and hand applique.

Colors or fabrics I'm attracted to... I love jewel tones, especially purples and deep pinks but I’m more wowed by well coordinated palettes, from brights to more muted tones.

stashMy fabric stash... I have a pretty wide-ranging stash with a focus on batiks, blenders and civil war prints. Colors tend to be in the blue/purple/pink area, and I’m working hard to incorporate colors that are not my favorites, to add that little spark to my quilts.

My quilting community... I’m a member of the Quilting Board, which I’ve found tremendously helpful, and QCA. I am also the volunteer facilitator for Jennifer Chiaverini’s Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler Block of the Week group. Creating my own version of the 140-block quilt helped build my techniques, and I hope it does the same for our participants who range from new to very experienced quilters.

My other hobbies and interests... I enjoy drawing (charcoal, pencil, and pen and ink) and painting in watercolors as well as photography and reading.

I entered Quilt Design Star™ 2012 because... The design process is my favorite part of quilting. With each challenge and new experience, I hope to improve my skills. Eventually I would like to publish patterns, mainly for beginners.

Links... My blog, which is in its infancy, is located at www.colormequilted.com.

What you should know about me… I’m married to a wonderful guy (Jeff) who always encourages me in quilting and other areas of my life. I have my own business providing website development to small businesses.

I would also like to share... We live in a lovely city in northwest Ohio.
