How long I've been quilting... I made my first quilt about 40 years ago.

I began quilting because... I thought it would be a good way to use up lots of scraps. I had no idea that there were quilting “rules”, so my first quilt has everything from velvet to polyester double knits in it!

Mariner's Jewels by Kristi ParkerMy quilting style is... Eclectic. I do some quilts that are whimsical, some traditional, some in earthy colors and some using bright jewel tones.

Other quilt design contests I've entered... I have only ever entered quilts in two big shows, but I won ribbons in both of them. I won the Founder’s Choice Award at the Southern New Hampshire Quilt Festival in 2007 for “Autumnal Equinox” and the Color Compatibility Award at A Quilter’s Gathering  in 2008 for “Tropical Whimsy”.

People who inspired me... My mom was an artist who always encouraged the creative side of me. I have definitely been inspired by quilt artists Judy Mathieson, Jane Sassaman, and Edtya Sitar.

I draw my inspiration from... The colors and shapes I see in nature. Sometimes I get inspired by an event or a feeling.

My Favorite techniques... My favorite quilts combine piecing and appliqué. I use foundation paper piecing when I make Mariner’s Compass blocks. Although I have a great appreciation of hand work, most of my quilts are pieced, appliquéd, and quilted all by machine.

Matt & Tracy Wedding Quilt by Kristi ParkerColors or fabrics I'm attracted to... I tend to gravitate toward jewel tones like royal blue, magenta, lime green, and bright yellows. Purple is my favorite!

My fabric stash... My stash probably isn’t as large as most, but I do have enough to choose from when I am making a scrappy quilt. I have mostly cottons, but I do other kinds of sewing too, so there is quite a variety of scraps in the sewing room. I am slowly building up a collection of batiks which I hope to use in a quilt some day.

My quilting community... I meet with a group of 6 other quilters on a monthly basis. I guess you could call us a “bee”, but we don’t have an official name. We critique each other’s work, offer encouragement and support…and we love to discuss movies, books, and a variety of other topics too!

I am also a founding member of the New England Quilt Designer’s Cooperative. We are a group of six designers who share booth space to vend at quilt shows in New England and beyond.

I am also a part of the Yahoo Quilt Designers Group, which I have found to be a very helpful resource.

Quilt by Kristi ParkerMy other hobbies and interests... On weekends, my alternate persona, “Krickey the Clown” comes alive. I belong to Granite State Clowns and as a troupe we perform at festivals, march in parades, and do many, many hours of volunteer work. The joy that I bring to people through clowning comes back at me ten-fold! It is great fun!

I entered Quilt Design Star™ 2012 because... It just sounded like a fun way to get my creative juices flowing. I think of it as a challenge to myself more than a contest between me and other people.

What you should know about me… I am a Family and Consumer Science teacher at a middle school. Among other things, I get to teach kids how to sew (and I love it!)

My publishing history... Currently, six of my patterns are published by Quiltwoman.com. The Quilt Pattern Magazine has published several of my patterns including “Summer Coneflowers” and “Color Explosion”.

I would also like to share... I have my own quilt pattern design company called “Chicken Soup Designs”. I chose that name because I tend to make quilts the way I make soup….just throw in all the leftover scraps, zing it up a little and stir….and out comes a yummy quilt!
