How long I've been quilting...  I have been quilting since 1989. I began quilting in Darmstadt Germany. My husband was stationed there as an Army Officer and the Officer’s Wives’ Club was offering an opportunity to join a quilt group. I ended up having the group at my house once a week for 2 years. I have never stopped since then. I remember my first quilt was Trip Around the World, a queen size, all hand quilted.

hutchI began quilting because... I had been sewing since I was 11 and had made most of my clothes and a lot of my children’s clothes, great dresses for my daughter. I even made several party dresses for my Wives’ Club friends. When the opportunity came up to learn to quilt it was a way to use my sewing addiction in a productive way. The addiction is to fabric and sitting at a sewing machine.

sewing areaMy quilting style is... I collect fat quarters and other fabric that calls me to notice them. Most of my quilts are scrap or organized scrap quilts. Even if I use new fabric, I always pull some from what I have. I make it look a little scrappy. I save fabric in quarters, and various widths of strips so I am always ready to sit down at my sewing machine. I do like collection packs. I love to use patterns from quilt magazines and tweek them to my style by changing the borders or blocks, just a little. I am a hand quilter and always finish my quilts by hand quilting. I love to make quilts as a sentimental gift for someone. I have made over 20 bible verse quilts for family and friends in which there are verses written on the quilt. The quilts are a blessing to the receiver and also to me. I recently put together a quilt for my son and his new bride. They had guests at his wedding write a bible verse or advice for their marriage on a quilt block. I put it together and recently gave it to them for their 1st anniversary.

dogOther quilt design contests I've entered... I entered the Quilt Design Star™ Challenge last year but didn’t become a finalist. I have also entered the Hoffman Challenge.

People who inspired me...  My mother taught me to sew when I was young. I was hooked. She taught me how to sew with perfection. She taught me the right way to rip out seams and put in zippers. She was always at her sewing machine, making my sister and I matching outfits. I did have the opportunity to make my parents an anniversary quilt before they passed away. My sister, Bonnie, and cousin, Peggy, are also an inspiration to me; both love the art of sewing as much as I do.

quilt frameI draw my inspiration from... My imagination is sparked by quilt magazines with great patterns, quilt books, fabric, new patterns, old fabric, plaids, and quilt shows, anything quilt. Once I get the spark, there is no stopping me. I am always looking for a good reason to make a quilt for someone.

My Favorite techniques... I like strip piecing, thangles, small blocks, log cabins, and so much more. I love pulling fabric from my stash, perhaps 100 different fabrics and putting it together to make a quilt. I can’t wait for the final product. I love all of the steps to making a quilt, finding the pattern, choosing the fabric, cutting the fabric, making the blocks, finishing the quilt and the best part, hand quilting.

Colors or fabrics I'm attracted to... Generally I like warm colors, golds, greens, burgundy, turquoise, reds. I do like a challenge though and like to have a reason to step out of my comfort zone. Recently I made a quilt for a wedding gift in purple and green, not my choice but it turned out gorgeous. The challenge was fun.

cutting tableMy fabric stash...  Huge. At least my husband thinks so. I have many 2 yard pieces but also many fat quarters. I like to  buy fabrics of a collection in a pack. I have all sorts of types of fabrics, all colors, all types. I like the revolutionary collections and the modern collections. Everything!!!

My quilting community...  Presently I do not belong to a guild but I am always willing to help with someone’s quilting questions. I have belonged to the Tidewater Quilters Guild in the past. Quilting is my alone time.

My other hobbies and interests... I am an avid skier and work as a Travel Director at a local Ski Shop, Ski World in Virginia Beach, Va.  I plan local bus trips, trips out West, and to Europe. I have also, recently, opened a travel agency in the Ski shop called Sun N Ski Travel.   I have a partner and we can take you “anywhere under the sun”. I am a runner. I ran in the Marine Corps Marathon.

I entered Quilt Design Star™ 2012 because... It was on my bucket list to enter a quilt challenge and have someone notice my distinct design. I have always wanted to enter a Quilt Design Contest and get further than entry level. I wanted to make finalist sometime in my lifetime and time is of the essence. I feel honored to have been selected as a finalist.

I would also like to share... Thank you to the Quilt Design Star™ team for this opportunity.
