How long I've been quilting... Almost ten years – I started when my oldest son was a baby.

I began quilting because... I wanted to make a baby quilt, of course! I had decided years before that quilting would be my hobby when I got “old” and retired. Then I read The Quilter’s Apprentice and realized that I didn’t have to wait until then.

most recent quiltMy quilting style is... Mostly traditional, I think, but in a modern way. (I like to make things quickly, machine piece, mostly machine quilt, rotary cut everything, and use bright, fun colors.)

Other quilt design contests I've entered... None; this is my first one!  Well, I have submitted a few designs to Quiltmaker’s Reader Design Contest.

People who inspired me... I’ve always liked my mother’s quilts, although she does lots of cute appliqué and I do mostly patchwork. My great-grandmother’s quilts caught my attention at a young age. And both my grandmothers think I can do anything, which inspires me to go ahead and try.

I draw my inspiration from... Sometimes it’s the person for whom I’m making the quilt. Sometimes it’s fabric. Sometimes it’s other quilts. Sometimes it’s a place or an experience. I guess just about anything can inspire me!

Great-Grandmother's quilt in progressMy Favorite techniques... I definitely prefer patchwork. I like to take traditional blocks and make them easier. Nearly all of my quilts are built of squares, rectangles, and half-square triangles.

Colors or fabrics I'm attracted to... I have more blue fabric in my stash than any other color, but I don’t seem to use blue more often than anything else. I guess when I’m shopping without a specific project in mind, blues just jump out at me. (Which is a little odd because purple and green are my favorite colors.)

My fabric stash...  I would describe my stash as outgrowing its space. I don’t have a separate space for sewing – my sewing machine and supplies are in the den with the TV, board games, computer, homeschool area, and lots of books and toys.

Mother's Day projectMy other hobbies and interests... I like to read, and sing, and cook (desserts, mostly), and I love acting in community theatre!

I entered Quilt Design Star™ 2012 because...  I’d never entered a quilt contest before, and I just wanted to do it. I’ve designed nearly all the quilts I’ve made, and my mother and grandmothers always think they’re wonderful (of course, they’re a just a little bit biased). So why not?

What you should know about me… I’m kind of a self-taught quilter. My mother taught me what she does, but she’s kind of self-taught, too. I’ve read a few books and articles in magazines (I actually learned quite a few things from the Elm Creek Quilts series), but some things I continue to do my own way. For instance, I use half-inch seams instead of quarter inch seams, because when I started, I was used to sewing clothes, but 5/8 inch seams made the math too hard. I thought half-inches would be easier to work with, but still sufficient. After I realized that quarter-inches were standard, I eventually started doing that, but after a few quilts (my daughter’s baby quilt, for one) I decided that my half-inch seams held up much better, so I went back to that. Also, I do binding differently, but I do use binding, which is a change from the way I started!

sewing areaMy publishing history... I have self-published (meaning I wrote patterns myself and print them on my home computer) seven patterns (so far) for my designs, which I sell on Etsy. (I’ve sold 5 so far.)

I would also like to share... I’m a stay-at-home mother of four children aged 1, 5, 7, and almost 10.  (3 boys, 1 girl)  My husband is an Army Recruiter. Although we live in Huntsville, TX, now, we only moved here a few months ago. Nearly all the rest of my life I’ve lived in Frankston, TX.
