How long I've been quilting... To keep me busy my mother gave me a needle and thread when I was around 5. I would trace pictures out of my coloring books then embroider them. Mom and I would then piece them into quilts. I have one lovely one of the Flintstones Character that always make me smile.

I began quilting because... My family has always had a history of needle work. To be like my mother and my sister I just had to start.

My quilting style is... I try to do different, thus leaning toward the Art quilt side of the medium. I enjoy trying new processes and changing things to reflect a variation on the original. Color is important to me and I love things that are bright.

Other quilt design contests I've entered... I have entered several shows, but not exclusive design competitions. My latest acceptance is the Adams County Arts Council’s Juried Show in Gettysburg, PA. I am very proud to help blur the line of viewing quilts as craft and move them into the realm of a work of art.

People who inspired me... In recent years, I have been taking on-line classes. The most positive influence has been from Dena Crain from Kenya. All of her classes give a new twist to my work, even to the point of losing all fear of cutting things and then putting them back together. Along with teaching classes Dena has a wonderful blog that I would encourage you to read.

I draw my inspiration from... Inspiration comes from everything around me. Nature, Abstract Art and photographs are all major sources for my work.

My Favorite techniques... Piecing is a constant, but adding paint and yarns or just the odd foreign element is not unusual for me.

Colors or fabrics I'm attracted to... Lately, I have been on a bright color fetish. It seems to make the pieces just jump and dance in the viewer’s eyes.

My fabric stash... My stash is ever growing, but my favorites are basic tone-on tone one color cotton prints. These add a small bit of movement and interest while giving the colors that I desire.

My quilting community... I have been a member of the York Quilters Guild for 25 years. Over that that time I have held a variety of offices, including President. I belong to AQS, SAQA, Mid-Appalachian Quilters and York Art Quilters. All of these supply meaning and creative enhancement to my life.

ElseyMy other hobbies and interests... As an art teacher, I have many other smaller hobbies to take my time and money; some of which are making jewelry, stained glass, and weavings. My other interests are gardening and reading.

I entered Quilt Design Star™ 2012 because... I had a friend encourage me to enter. I love having a challenge and a deadline to meet. So, this is a perfect fit for me.

Links... I am found on Facebook and Pinterest @ Barbara Wilke.

What you should know about me… I have 2 grown children and live with my 2 cuddly cats who are strong critics of my work.
