Pieced Squares: Quick Quarter-Square Triangles (QST) |
Watch our video...
Skip the triangle cutting and start with 2 fabric squares for fast, accurate quarter-square triangle units. Laura Stone Roberts demonstrates this easy technique.
Step-by-Step Instructions...
Step 1. Determine cut size of square.
The formula for cut size of a square to make a pieced square of quarter-square triangles is: side of finished square + 1¼˝ (e.g. finished square = 2½˝, cut size of square is 3¾˝).
Step 2. Mark and Sew
Draw 2 diagonal lines on wrong side of one square. Referring to Diagram I, place marked square on 2nd different square, right sides together. Sew ¼˝ seam on each side of one line. Cutting on unsewn line first, then on remaining drawn line, cut sewn square into quarters. Open and press to make 4 pieced triangles.

Diagram I
Sew 2 pieced triangles together to make pieced square (Diagram II).
