I've been quilting for.. about 20 years.

I began quilting because.. We can blame my Mother for this one! See, I was raised on a ranch and growing up, I was taught how to cook, clean and sew but I didn’t care for it and would rather be outside. When my Mother passed away, I was going through a closet that was full of boxes. I found some old quilts and quilt tops that she and my Grandmothers had made. I also found a box of 5” squares and blocks that she had started making a quilt with, at that moment I fell in love with all those quilts and the UFO’s that were in the boxes...  

My style is.. I always called myself the Maverick. I quilt because I love it and scrappy quilts are some of my favorites. I love designing patterns, from pieced to appliqué. I tell people if my quilting was judged, you would want the judge it on a fast horse.   I was inspired by.. my Mother. She was a beautiful seamstress and if she had not taught me and pulled me along to all of the quilting bees, and made me take sewing in 4-H, who knows what would have happened to those boxes of fabric. I have taken a lot of classes over the years and I can say every teacher has inspired me in some way. Judy Zehneer from Hayden was my first instructor when I started. It was a log cabin quilt and I was so excited to learn how that I made my husband haul a treadle sewing machine into hunting camp, so I could keep on quilting. That quilt won Grand Champion at Routt County fair the next year. Over the years I have kept in touch with Judy and she has inspired me to always go to the next level.

I find inspiration in.. everything….I look at the outdoors and see all the color and designs. I can look at a floor and see a quilt block. So, I would say nothing is safe around me. It may be a future quilt!! I have designed some quilts the last couple of years. One was for the Colorado Women Republican party; this was to raise money for the Korean veterans. The quilt was an Eagle flying over the Colorado Rockies; the borders had Columbine flowers all the way around and a Colorado flag in each corner. This quilt is hanging in a Veteran hospital in Denver, Colorado. I also was asked to make a quilt for the youth of the American Paint Horse Association foundation. This was another art quilt; it was 4 paint horses running down from the mountains. It ended up quilt size with a flying geese border and fabric with feathers as another border.

My favorite techniques are.. When I first started it was pieced and only pieced. I have since learned appliqué and have really enjoyed it. I really enjoy doing art quilts but my art quilts are the ranch and what we have around us and I combine both techniques into them. I’m a tradional person and enjoy that style the most.

I'm attracted to.. COUNTRY!!!! I love Kansas Troubles fabric and Thimblerries. I go right to the warm colors. WESTERN fabric…I don’t leave a store without some western fabric in my bag. I love the batiks, and I do get out of my box and buy other fabric but those are my favorites. 

My stash is.. OUT OF CONTROL!! (That is how my husband would describe it.) I would argue with him about that! I have fabric in 2 bins and more yard cuts on shelves. My western fabric is on a shelf by itself. I have anything that is fat quarter or smaller sorted by color in bins. Then, I have squares cut into 10” or smaller in bins also. Christmas fabric and Aunt Grace and kits are in tubs under the sewing tables. I started with one room and now have moved to two. I also have flannel and other fabric for different projects.

I belong to.. the Delectable Mountain Quilt Guild, a quilting group in Steamboat Springs, Co. They have about 75 members and do classes and programs every month. When we lived in Grand Junction a few years ago, I was a member of the two groups down there. I’m an active member of the Colorado Quilting Council, and I'm a member of the American Quilting Society and the National Quilting Society. I’ve been a member of the online quilting group call New Strolling, a block quilting group.

I’m one of the founding members of the Yampa Valley Piecemaker’s Quilting Guild here in Craig. We formed this group in my living room with 10 members present, I was the VP the first year and I’m the President this year. At present, we have over 30 members and meet once a month with programs on quilting. We have done an annual quilt show with our local museum. I’m very proud of this guild. I also teach quilting at the local college.  We have a UFO’s classes every week and a quilting class about once a month. I have been the instructor of the local 4-H quilting club for the last 2 years.  

What you should know about me.. I have been married 43 years to a wonderful man, Phil, who has put up with me and my quilting for half of them. I was raised on a ranch and today we live on a farm which is 105 years old, outside of Craig, Co. We are sharing our home with 2 toy poodles and a Papillion. I have 4 children and 9 grandchildren (with another due in December), one great Great Grandchild. Dustin and another due in December. December will be a busy month for babies in this family. I work for the Visiting Nurse Association and Community Health clinic here in Craig; I’m the medical biller for Medicare and Medicaid. I enjoy designing and quilting and love to share my quilting with everyone. 

My non-quilting hobbies.. I enjoy doing things with my husband, Phil and my Grandchildren when I can.  My grandchildren are all very talented in sports and I love to watch them when able. We raise Quarter and Paint Horses and some are in training for barrel races. It is great to load up and go to the barrel races and watch your horse’s performance. I have one grandson that does Little Britches rodeo and we attend a few of them. I enjoy photography very much and always have a camera with me. I’m not great at it… but I sure do take a lot pictures of everything.  I tell myself they are all future quilts in the making. I enjoy reading novels and have some authors that I collect. Antiques and collecting antique quilts has always been a love of mine. I crochet and knit but haven’t done any projects for awhile. Instead, I go right to the sewing machine. I’m on the Moffat County Fair Board and help with the County Fair. I love to garden... flowers, I leave the vegetable garden to Phil and my grandson.

I entered Quilt Design Star™ because.. I was on your web site and saw the “STAR Contest”. I read the rules, and thought, I have the quilt for this contest and I can do this. We were headed to Montana the next day and that was your deadline. I grabbed my quilt and camera as we headed to the local Gymkhana to watch grandkids ride. I tried to get pictures of the quilt that night and they didn’t work out so well. So, when I got home I took pictures again of the quilt. My home computer was acting up so I drove into my work bright and early and entered the contest. I didn’t even know I was accepted into the contest until I returned from Montana. What a nice surprise that was.
