Design Star™ 2010 Finalist - Danna Kilby-Compton

Design Star™ 2010 Finalist - Danna Kilby-Compton

I've been quilting for.. a little over 8 years.

I began quilting because.. After I had my daughter, Emily, in Feb. 2002, I had an overwhelming desire to make her a quilt. Also, I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Murray State University and I wanted to make "art quilts". I fell in love with traditional quilt-making, though, and still haven't made an art quilt.

I learned by.. watching "Simply Quilts" on HGTV and read books about quilting, and, of course, trial-and-error. Danna Kilby-Compton

My style is.. I don't really have a "style". I like many different styles, from very traditional to modern.

I am inspired by.. None of my living family members quilted. I am inspired by every quilter that I meet, whether seasoned or beginner.

I draw inspiration from.. anywhere I can ... tile floor patterns, other quilt designs, even from God ... Divine inspiration.

My favorite techniques are.. traditional piecing, either by machine or by hand. I love the look of appliqué, but I don't like doing it myself.

I am attracted to.. earthtones are my favorites, but I occasionally work with brights for the fun of it and to do something different for a while.

My stash is.. eclectic ... actually I opened a fabric/quilt shop, Notions & Whims Fabric in Madisonville, Kentucky, three-and-a-half years ago to "support my habit" (as I tell my customers).

I belong to.. the local quilt guild called "Piecemakers Quilt Club of Hopkins County". It is a group of about 35 ladies (whom I have learned a great deal from) that, in addition to promoting quilting, has several community-service projects, like making quilts for the NICU newborns at the local hospital.

Also, quilting is my ministry, and I help with a class at church that makes quilts for the Methodist Children's Home in Versailles, Kentucky. A t the beginning of each class I read the students a quilting-related devotional.

Flat Robin Crayon Challenge by Danna Kilby-Comptom

"Flat Robin Crayon Challenge" (left) is a small wall hanging that was a project that we did in our quilt club a few years ago. We had to draw three crayons from a paper sack; we couldn't put them back and we couldn't switch with anyone.   I drew Vermillion, Meadow Green and Green Blue. Each month for several months we were instructed as to what kind of border that we were to add, but we did the work ourselves, instead of passing from person-to-person as in a Round Robin, hence the term "Flat Robin". It was fun and the quilt is bright and colorful.

My non-quilting hobbies are.. Before I became a quilter, my hobby was Dollhouse Miniatures. I hope to combine my quilting and miniatures hobbies one day.

What else you should know about me.. I am 41 years old and a soon-to-be-single mother of one beautiful daughter, Emily. I live just outside of Madisonville, Kentucky, which has been my home-away-from-home for 13 years. I'm originally from Bandana, Kentucky, which is just a little over 20 miles from Paducah, Kentucky, a.k.a. "Quilt City". I lived and worked in Paducah for several years, but wasn't a quilter at the time, just an admirer.

I entered Quilt Design Star™ because.. a friend of mine told me about the contest and thought it was right up my alley. I worked as a graphic designer for 17 years before opening Notions & Whims Fabric, and I'm always using my graphic design skills to design quilts, projects, newsletters, etc., for the shop.

LOVE PURE COLOR
Great work. Very bold & gorgeous. Love the pure colors on black. I did a BOM one year at quild I'm in of rabbits on black when everyone else was doing muslin or pale blue background. They thought I was crazy when I started, but the tune had changed by the time I got halfway through. The black just makes stuff pop.
American Traditions
Bold and beautiful! I love that although it is traditional, it has a modern vibe! Great job, Danna!
stars are the window to heaven
love the bold basic colors then to set them off in stars was great.
American Traditions....
Love the inner border. Black with the bright colors is always stunning.
DANNA. KEEN EYE FOR COLOR
DANNA IS ALWAYS THERE FOR ME WHEN I NEED HELP WITH A COLOR FOR MY BORDERS TO MATCH THE BLOCKS I HAVE MADE. MY QUILTS TURN OUT GREAT EVERY TIME. THANKS.
Danna! Always supplying a springboard for our imaginations and creativity!
Danna says she has always wanted to do "art quilts" and but has gotten focused on traditional quilting - I say she has created MANY beautiful art quilts and has helped other quilters do the same! Way to go, Danna!
