About Janice Stevens...

I've been quilting since… I have been quilting for about 15 years

Janice Stevens 1

I began quilting because… I began quilting when I decided to make a quilt for my son's wedding. My daughter in law picked Ocean Waves and I did not know any better. I learned quickly.

I learned to quilt… I was a garment sewer, making clothes for my children and then did craft items. Dolls and teddy bears.

My quilting style is… I would say my quilting style is transitional. I love traditional patterns and then move outside the box. I have learned that it is not only about the center of the quilt but the whole composition all the way to the binding.

A person who inspired me…  My twin sister Jean is my inspiration. She does beautiful appliqué work. My friend Gloria is also my inspiration, she also is a traditionalist but can put great things together and makes me think.

Janice Stevens 2My imagination is sparked by… I draw most of my inspiration from books, magazines like McCall's but mostly from quilt shows. I examine other quilters' techniques. It also gives me a view of a quilt's total composition from a distance. I also draw much of my inspiration from my fabric choice. It all starts with the fabric.

My favorite techniques… My favorite techniques are piecing both hand and machine. I also love to appliqué.

Colors or fabrics I'm attracted to... I love bold colors and I love fabric with movement or large patterns.

My fabric stash... Oh my stash is another issue. Very large and fortunately or unfortunately moving into the next room. I buy at least 3 yards when I see something. I also have many boxes of controlled scraps cut into various sizes. I love all fabrics and my stash shows that.

My quilting community… I belong to a quilt guild K.I.S.S. We have 120 members that meet once a month. Our guild has made over 800 quilts to send to Walter Reed for injured soldiers. Also a service project group that meets to do quilts and projects for local needy agencies. I also belong to a group called "Across the Miles". This group of 32 ladies meet once a year for the past 17 years in Paducah, Kentucky at the AQS show. We stay a week, have handmade exchanges one night, do a quilt challenge with an assigned theme another night. We request prizes from manufacturers who are always very generous and give out door prizes. It is a week of fun but also we learn quilting skills from one another.

My additional hobbies/interests… I do love to swim and do gardening. Right now weeding is not much fun.

I entered Quilt Design Star™ 2011 because...  I entered the Quilt Design Star™ contest because I love challenges. It makes me think outside of my comfort zone. I am looking forward to this challenge and in a crunch period of time. Thank you for giving me this opportunity.

Links... I do have a MobileMe gallery which does show my quilts.

What you should know about me… I would like people to know the other part of my life is about my husband who encourages and supports this quilting habit. I have 5 grown children who live all over the United States and 13 grandchildren. Traveling to see them does take up a chunk of my time but it also allows me to visit many wonderful quilt shops and visit with quilters from all over.
