Design Star 2010 Finalist - Kathleen Whiting |
About Kathleen Whiting...
Check out Kathleen's contest quilts at the bottom of this page.
I've been quilting since.. It's probably easier to say maybe the first couple years of my life I wasn't quilting, and I am 51, so a really long time. I quilted BR (before rotary). I have seen a lot of techniques come and go, including hand embroidery on all my blocks and a tri-chem paint Raggedy Ann and Andy quilt. (Remember tri-chem paint tubes?) I know I am old!
I started quilting because.. I don't think I had a choice. It was part of my family history; it was just part of my life. I thought it was normal that women would sit and cut up pieces of fabric and sew them back together. It is, isn't it?
I learned to quilt by.. I remember kneeling around a footstool with little blocks that I had cut from my mom's scraps, and then putting them together with a needle and thread that my grandad taught me how to thread. Oh, I couldn't use the sewing machine - I wasn't even as tall as the table. I remember being scared of the pins...I thought they would poke me.
My style is.. Humm! Maybe traditional made modern. I can't let a quilt be, without adding a little style of my own. I love adding applique whether on a traditional or modern quilt.
I am inspired by.. great quilters who are around me. Right now, I am inspired by my daughter, Natalia Bonner, who is only 27 years old. She is a non stop, endless energy, die-hard quilter.

I draw inspiration from.. Let's see, A to Z so many things, places, fabrics, feelings. With the giraffe quilt, I looked at the fabric and thought, "Those dots look like a giraffe!" Wahoo! My favorite techniques are.. I love traditional piecing and applique. I am also the designated binder. So I do really nice machine bindings. My stash is.. STASH? I don't have time for that! I want to make it as soon as I visualize! Okay, maybe that isn't true. We have PieceNQuilt.com but I haven't counted the bolts for awhile. |
I belong to.. Yes! I belong to 1 bee, a King Bee (my husband),and 2 guilds: Heber Valley Quilters and Long Arm QT's.
My non-quilting hobbies are.. Is there something to do other than quilt? No! Really, I love to design! I have designed and decorated home interiors for many years. I always have a project going. I also love the outdoors each season. I love my yard, camping, boating, hiking or looking out the window while quilting!
I entered Quilt Design Star™ because.. I need more fun, and I love designing! I would be honored to design for a larger audience.
Visit me at.. PieceNQuilt.com. What you should know about me.. Quilting is the best therapy! Everyone should do it! |
