What could be more American
than a Bear's Paw quilt pieced in patriotic reds, whites, and blues?
Use various blue prints to create the basis of the block, and as the
maker of this antique did, only add the red "claws" on some
of the blocks for unique appeal. The great expanses of white fabric
leave ample room for displaying intricate quilting skills.

PLANNING THE QUILT
What often appeals to us about vintage quilts is the unplanned,
casual appearance of patchwork. On closer inspection of this quilt,
Bear's Paw blocks have been combined with Shoo Fly blocks that simply
look like Bear's Paws with no claws! We have included some quick-cutting
and piecing methods to speed this project along.

PIECING THE BLOCKS
1. Referring to Diagram I to make
Bear's Paw Block, place 2 3/8" white square on 2 3/8" red
square, right sides together. Using fine-point marking tool, draw a
corner-to-corner diagonal line. Sew 1/4" on each side of marked
line; cut in half on drawn line. Press open to make 2 pieced squares.
Make 160.
2. Using 3 7/8" white squares and 3 7/8" blue squares,
make 60 pieced squares in same manner as step #1.
3. Referring to Diagram II,
use pieced squares and 2" white squares to make large pieced squares.
Make 40.
