Planning
The background fabric used for these projects is 60"-wide, 100% cotton "Sandcastle," manufactured by Dan River, Inc. Pat used the "natural" Sandcastle fabric and tea-dyed it. She shares her method for tea-dyeing so that you may do likewise if you wish.
Pat used National Nonwovens' WoolFelt® for the appliqués. Yardages given for the felted wool are based on 36"-wide WoolFelt®.

Fusible Appliqué Instructions
1. Trace templates on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on drawn lines. |
| 2. Referring to photo and respective Placement Diagram, position prepared template fabrics on appropriate background fabric. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place. Note: WoolFelt® may be too thick for fusing to background. Pin to hold in place if necessary. Appliqué edges by hand or machine using buttonhole stitch (see buttonhole diagram). |
 |
3. Bind place mats and table runner with red/green plaid flannel fabric (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions).
Tea-Dyeing Fabric
Supplies
• Large canning or pasta pot
• 3-4 tea bags with paper hanger cut off (not decaf or herbal) Note: The darker you want the piece the more tea bags you will need.
• Spoon for stirring
Tea-Dyeing Process
1. Fill pot with enough water to cover fabric by 2".
2. Boil water. Reduce to a simmer and add tea bags.
3. Let tea bags simmer for 5 minutes, then turn off burner.
4. Place fabric in pot and stir so it is all wet. Add more tap water if necessary.
5. Let fabric soak 20 minutes. Take a peek—it will look much darker while wet.
6. If it looks "good," drain the water.
7. Put fabric into washing machine and run through one rinse cycle.
8. Dry in dryer. If darker color is desired, repeat process using stronger tea bath. |
