Patriot Parade: A Visit with Audrey Wright

Wright Audrey 225px Patriot Parade: A Visit with Audrey WrightWelcome guest blogger and quilt and fabric designer Audrey Wright of Legacy Patterns. Audrey’s lap quilt Patriot Parade is featured in the February/March 2016 issue of McCall’s Quick Quilts. Read on and don’t miss the fabric giveaway contest at the bottom of the page!

Hello Quilters! I am thrilled that McCall’s Quilting invited me to be a guest blogger. Fabric has been a passion of mine my whole life and I love to share that passion and encourage other quilter’s. My favorite times are getting together with a group of quilting friends and chatting while we work on projects. We  have a group called “Midnighter’s” that started in 1998 when I owned my quilt shop and still meets one weekend a month. Connecting with friends is how I feel when looking at McCall’s magazines both past issues and current. It allows me to renew my creative spirit and get new ideas for designs.

Patriot Parade FLAT 400px Patriot Parade: A Visit with Audrey WrightYou can see my quilt Patriot Parade in the February/March 2016 issue of McCall’s Quick Quilts. I used my fabric line Redwork Meets Bluework designed for RJR Fabrics for the quilt. I have a little story about how I was inspired to make this quilt. I belong to a small quilt guild here in Kansas that I helped start about 15 years ago. At one of the meetings the speaker was from the local Quilts of Valor quilting group. The ladies showed several quilts and spoke about the projects they work on and how we could help. During show and share I displayed two small projects made from Redwork Meets Bluework. The QOV ladies commented that it was perfect for a QOV project. I took one of their flyers thinking I would make a quilt for them. So when I heard that McCall’s was working on a QOV series for the magazine I contacted them and this is the result. This quilt will be given to QOV to present to a deserving veteran. We now have a committee dedicated to the veteran’s quilt project in our guild. I used the QOV guidelines when designing Patriot Parade so it could be donated when I was finished.

AnnasRunnerFront 400px 194x300 Patriot Parade: A Visit with Audrey WrightI admit the original concept behind the fabric line was redwork and bluework stitchery and two-colored quilts. I designed my Anna’s Runner pattern (left) using just two fabrics. I think the contrast of the two-colored quilts is striking.

I have started designing counted cross-stitch patterns and Anna’s Runner was inspired by vintage sampler designs from the 1700s and 1800s. I am drawn to the handwork of the past and enjoy doing things by hand too.

Patriot Parade is designed to go together quickly with only two block designs. I think this would be perfect to use for a weekend retreat or a workshop. It would be fun to reverse the colors or even use red, white, and blue scraps to get a different look.

I am very grateful that I get to spend my time playing with fabric, designing and creating.
I still remember the first time I attended International Quilt Market and Quilt Festival in 1996. I looked around and took a deep breath and said to myself “I’m home!”
