Bevels: A Visit with Patti Carey

Carey Patti 250px Bevels: A Visit with Patti CareyMeet guest blogger, quilt and fabric designer, and Northcott’s Vice President of Public Relations Patti Carey. Patti’s quilt Bevels is featured in the October/November 2015 issue of McCall’s Quick Quilts. Read on and don’t miss the fabulous fabric giveaway contest at the bottom of the page!

For this quilt, I wanted to do something easy, since it is McCall’s Quick Quilts, so the STRIP-R fabric from the Ambience collection made this quilt super easy.  I also wanted to make something that was kind of modern – I joined a modern quilt guild recently, and it has me rethinking the style of quilts that I make.  With this in mind, I included a lot of background (negative space).

20707 44 Bevels: A Visit with Patti CareyThis quilt, surprisingly, uses only 2 fabrics: the white background and the STRIP-R fabric.  What is a STRIP-R?  It is a fabric with twenty-one 2” wide lengthwise strips across the width.  I pitched the idea of this fabric design to Northcott’s Creative Director Deborah Edwards, and, happily, she was able to bring my idea to fruition, including them in a large selection of current and upcoming Northcott collections.

Why 2” strips? Because they are like a jellyroll that is already sewn together, eliminating the need to sew the strips together.  The possibilities for STRIP-R’s are endless!  They work in so many of the jellyroll patterns available today – simply start at step 2!  They can be used in so many creative ways – Northcott has added a STRIP-R video to their YouTube channel showing just some of the ways in which quilters can use this innovative fabric for quick and easy quilts and projects.

Bevels finishes 91″ x 103 1/2″, a generous queen size.

I wanted to use the Ambience STRIP-R to its advantage, letting the fabric do the work in the quilt.  The Bevels quilt uses big pieces of STRIP-R fabric cut from lengthwise strips, and equally big pieces of background fabrics.  It went together very quickly.
