This issue is packed with bright prints and funky pattern designs, with a few features that call upon really neat retro colors that speak to summer. Bea Lee’s Retro Tulip lap quilt is a gorgeous pattern for fusible appliqué that lets you quickly create lush flowers to complement elegant pieced stars. We love Bea’s use of retro floral prints!

Another awesome modern pattern in this issue is One Way or Another, by Michelle Freedman. Bright bold fabrics including Maywood Pearl Gemstones combine with Michelle’s clever design to make this super-fun lap quilt. Michelle added one orange and one green strip to her binding for a bit of visual pop.

Heidi Pridemore’s Highway Heroes is filled with easy-to-appliqué rescue trucks and cars that make a wonderful gift and add fun colors to any little hero’s bedroom. Heidi uses the Planes, Trains & Automobiles collection from Timeless Treasures. This is another great pattern for those of you who like using the fast and easy fusible appliqué technique!

Wall Hangings and Mini-Quilts
We’ve included several patterns for smaller quilts that are great to hang on a wall in a studio, kitchen or bedroom. In Melinda Honn’s pattern, Cute as a Button, you’ll learn to machine-sew buttons for a fast finish. Melinda uses pinwheel blocks that are made up of assorted prints—a perfect use for scrap fabrics!

    My favorite is One Way or Another. I like the movement of it. You can’t help but track the arrows with your eyes. It would be cool as a “Where’s the …” for kids and adults. I think I’d even make myself on out of cat fabrics!

    I love Hearts so Heartstrings caught my eye; however, pinwheels are always fun to do so I also like Cute as a Button. But, Stars are also a favorite so Moonlight Stars really caught my eye. The Retro Tulips are really a fun fantasy block.

    I would have to say “The Apple of my Eye” is what I can’t wait for. I already made a quilt (From McCall’s Quilting Aug 2009) with this theme and a runner is just perfect for finishing the look.

    Decisions. Decisions. How do I choose just one? If I were going to be selfish and choose for myself it would be Whole Lotta Love! But the men in my life are ALL first responders – for them (or at least one of them) I would make Highway Heroes. And then for my sister who lives with us and has a developmental disability I would make Heartstrings. That will keep me busy for a while.
