I had the pleasure of contributing my Peppermint Petals block design to the 6th Volume of sister publication Quiltmaker‘s popular 100 Blocks collector’s edition, and am delighted to join in the blog tour…welcome to McCall’s Quilting Editor’s Blog!
When I saw Robyn Pandolph’s Incense & Peppermints collection designed for RJR Fabrics, I thought of soft, romantic ruffles. I had a sample of Fabric Magic by Pellon from Spring 2012 International Quilt Market, and decided this was the perfect opportunity to give it a try.
I started by using my ruler as a straight edge to draw the first stitch line parallel with the shortest edge of the Fabric Magic. After pinning the Fabric Magic to the center panel, I used a walking foot and stitch guide set at 1″ from the needle to stitch all the horizontal lines.
I followed the directions on the package of the Fabric Magic, and first steamed the back of the block section, then the front. Remember not to let the iron touch the Fabric Magic, but rather just let the steam shrink it.

This part was fun! I tried to be sure I had evenly steamed all areas on the front and back to prevent any further alteration in the fabric section later.
Here’s what the panel section looked like after…a little wonky, but trims nicely down to the right size.
I used the soft-appliqué technique for the petals…click here for a helpful McCall’s Quilting University video demonstration.
I used a machine blanket-stitch to attach the petals, and carefully trimmed the backing away from behind each petal.
Image below is quick mock-up of my concept for a completed quilt using the Peppermint Petals block. Be sure to email a photo if you give this block a try or use it in a quilt of your own…I would love to see!
And last but not least, leave a comment below to be entered to win a FREE copy of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, Volume 6! We’ll randomly choose a winner on Monday, November 12.
Editor’s note 11/12/12:
Congratulations to our winner, Stephanie Matz!
