My first reaction to the theme for this challenge was, “What a great theme!” It is so like the monthly challenges we have in a contemporary quilt group that I belong to (Crossing Borders) and I thought it would be easy. All sorts of opposites came quickly to mind, but as my list of opposites grew and grew I realized it was not going to be quite as easy as I thought. So with my list in hand, I went to the computer. Oh, the power of Google! I did a search on “Opposites Attract” and came up with a couple of quotes that seemed to fit in with opposites from my list. Now I’m trying to choose blocks to go with the quotes and fabrics to go with the opposites I have chosen.
This design is more of a challenge for me than the first two challenges. Give me a block or fabric to work with, and I can usually come up with a design pretty easily. However, I can have a hard time deciding on just one approach when I have a theme. There are too many choices and no real starting point! Once I finally settle on a block or fabric to go along with the theme though, the design will come together quickly.
Being a part of McCall’s Quilting QDS™ has been a lot of fun. The challenges have been varied and I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing what the other designers have come up with given the same criteria. We have all seen things alike in some ways and so differently in others. QDS has brought out some truly fantastic quilt designs and I can’t wait to see what the final challenge quilts look like.
Thanks to all at McCall’s Quilting for sponsoring this great contest, and to all of the sponsors for the fantastic goodies along the way! And a special thank you to all who voted for my designs.
This update has been brought to you by Sulky, one of our fine QDS™ 2012 sponsors.
