QDS™ Challenge 3 Designer: Annette Schultz

2012 QDS OFFICIAL LOGO4 QDS™ Challenge 3 Designer: Annette SchultzAnnette Schultz QDS™ Challenge 3 Designer: Annette SchultzFirst I thought WOW I made it to the finals! When I found out that we had the theme “opposites attract” I thought ” oh, wow, where do I begin?….make a list from what ever pops into my head. From my list I went to the computer to pull up what it thought about opposites and found most of my ideas there too. Now to short list it down to 3 from over 20,and work out some on paper. From the  3 possibilities  remaining I ran my design ideas and sketches past a few friends and came up with the one I will work out into my quilt.IMG 2562 400px QDS™ Challenge 3 Designer: Annette Schultz

I am excited to get started on the design I have chosen; I used something we see in our lives around us, something that speaks to me. I will be trying a new technique on this quilt. I have pulled a couple fabrics from my stash but alas I have to pick up a few more to get the look I want. I hope you all will enjoy my design in this last challenge.

Challenge 3 has me once again thinking outside of where/how I normally design. Having a starting point and time frame helps me achieve short term goals and time lines. I have found this challenge to be a little more free flowing as it is just your ideas based on the theme, no boundaries of pattern or color. This has been a great exercise and a growing experience for my quilt designing. Just thinking of all the possibilities out there and knowing that  anything is possible if you try. I have only designed on a smaller scale up until now and I know I want to continue on this path, even after the end of the competition. I think the key is to always be on the look out for new design possibilities. And maybe just maybe, one day I will be published in McCall’s Quilting.IMG 2556 400px QDS™ Challenge 3 Designer: Annette Schultz

I have enjoyed sharing with my community my joy of quilting and letting them know about the challenge and opportunity that McCall’s Quilting has for any one who may want to try this next year. I have also enjoyed seeing where the ideas have taken on my design journey.

Our local paper will be doing a third photo and article with this last entry. I have received a lot of local support from the folks here in town, as well as through my blog http://institchesandseams.blogspot.ca, and of course my friends and family.

It’s been an incredible journey sew far; I hope to travel this road for a long time. There have been sew many great quilts made by all the contestants, with only more to come. I am looking forward to seeing the Challenge 3 entries.
