MQ: What was your reaction when you first realized you would be required to design a quilt that incorporated the fabric you received?
“The print on the required fabric is huge. I was also worried about getting other fabrics to use with the required one. I have to thank my friends Nancy, Tammie, and Joyce for helping me with that end. After that part was taken care of, I had to give the design requirements some serious thought. Since at least 20% of the quilt had to be the required fabric and the pattern was so large, I decided to use large pieces of the print. This fabric screams to have a relatively simple design to show it off and so that’s what I’m doing.”

MQ: How has this 2nd challenge compared to the 1st challenge for you?
“The second challenge is more relaxing for me. I guess I’ve decided to do my best for the competition and although winning is great, it’s the designing that I love. If everyone thinks the quilt is great and I go on, that’s wonderful but if that doesn’t happen, I had a great time with the contest!”
MQ: Do you normally choose fabrics first and then start a design, or vice versa?
“It depends on what I’m doing. If I’m designing for a fabric company, I of course have the fabric first and then come up with the design. If it’s for me, I usually have a design in mind and then go for the fabrics.”
