The first step Kay took to begin designing the Challenge 2 quilt to was to go to her stash and pull any fabrics that coordinated with the challenge fabric, including a few from the sponsor prize box.
We asked Kay how this challenge has compared to the first challenge:
“Interestingly, the lack of “rules” was the challenge. For the 1st challenge, the Storm at Sea block was a launching point for a theme, color and design. For the 2nd challenge, I laid out the challenge fabric with the coordinating fabrics and found I had no thoughts- total blank slate. Typically, the ideas are so many, that the job is to narrow it down to one. Math is not my first, second or third language, so the idea of using 20% or more of the challenge fabric on the quilt took awhile to process in my mind. After a few days of thinking, the quilt is now underway. This photo shows what is left of the challenge fabric!”
Kay was elated to learn that her quilt design titled “Stormy the Sea Turtle” was recognized as the winner of Challenge 1 in the Professional Category. One of her adult sons gave her a big hug and said, “Mom, I am so proud of you!” That made Kay’s day!

Kay–thanks for explaining exactly how I feel about Challenge 2–it’s the lack of rules and the MATH of 20% that had me thrown for a loop too!!! Can’t wait to see what you come up with!!
