We asked Tom a few questions about this second challenge round:
Do you normally choose fabrics first and then start a design, or vice versa?
“Normally I choose the design or the scene first. Then I select the fabrics that will finish the story. There are so many effects that can be created with fabrics, and since there are 5 quilt shops in our area, I enjoy the hunt for the exact fabric for each design. So having the fabric first created a bit of a dilemma for me. There were so many possibilities I had trouble seeing just one design.”
Is that blue or green?
How has this 2nd challenge compared to the 1st challenge for you?
“Wow! At first I thought it would be much more complicated by having to use the paisleys. Then I realized that the fabric would lend a fluid approach to my artistic side. The first challenge design was difficult for me since I do not have a great deal of experience with using quilt blocks. I like using fabrics like a painter uses paint to design a scene. The second challenge has felt more comfortable because I can use the fabric to create a story.”

Share some of your feelings about your participation in the first 2 challenges of QDS™.
“I was really excited (blown away) to have been selected to participate in the first challenge. When I got the news about the 2nd challenge I was overwhelmed and flattered. Now I feel the pressure is really on to be able to create a fantastic quilt to stand up with the other talented ladies of the competition. There are some amazing designers in this contest and I only hope I can measure up to these high standards.”
