Yuletide Ribbon Wreath
Kay tells us about her progress in Challenge 1: “I’ve made a few Storm at Sea quilts in the last few years. One of the challenges of this block, when all the blocks are different, is getting the right color fabric in the place you meant for it to be with minimal reverse sewing. The previous Storm at Sea quilts I made were pieced, so for this challenge I decided to paper piece the block. I was able to transfer the design in my head to EQ7, changing things around a few times before I was satisfied. The challenge instructions said the design should convey who I am as a designer. I am loving the results so far and hope my voting peeps will agree!
I had major surgery during the first voting phase and still can’t drive. So fabric shopping was not an option. We all know there is a good reason our stash is so grand! There may be a few fabrics that I would have added, but overall I was content. I started organizing the selected fabrics by color value on a big table. After about two hours I had over 300 fat quarters and larger pieces selected and sorted. I calculate the final project will use about 260 of them.
At this writing, I am now about three-quarters of the way in my progress on this challenge. I listen to books on CD while I sew and have finished Among the Mad by Jacqueline Windspear, A Cure for Night by Justin Peacock, Sisterchicks in Sombreros by Robin Jones Gunn and Soundless by Lysa Williams for a total of 26 hours of recordings plus several Reds baseball games!”
Kay tells us about her sewing “companion”: “My quilting studio is in the basement and I have a window well by my machine. We don’t have any pets, but last summer this brown toad came to visit most every day. I named him Prince and enjoyed watching him climb on a concrete turtle in the window well. I always wondered what he thought as he watched me watching him! This summer I am hoping he’ll remember to come visit.”

I want to be more than little girl with her nose up against the glass looking in, wanting to participate. I , unlike the little girl, I am getting closer to finding where and when contests have been. Next year, who knows what I will be capable of. hee hee
