Cheryl Adam, a finalist in our Professional category, submitted her quilt “1796 Pieces – That’s a Lot of Purple” in the entry round of McCall’s Quilt Design Star™ 2012.

1796 Pieces-That's a Lot of Purple
Cheryl writes: “Everyone has been really giving me lots of encouragement. When my friends found out I going on to the 1st challenge, they couldn’t help but give me a hard time. They wanted to know if this meant they had to vote for me again and what would they get if I won. I do know that I am very lucky to have a group of friends like these because even though they tease, they’re always there and are willing to help with whatever.”
On her design process so far: “This will be my first Storm at Sea Block. It’s one that I’ve always thought I could do something with but just never got around to it. Too many ideas, not nearly enough time. I pulled up EQ7 and found the Storm at Sea Block. Then I messed around with it in a couple of simple designs and colorings. I am not using any of these, but the process lets me get familiar with the block and how it can look. I am fortunate to have the ability to formulate and see designs in my head, I guess that comes from my training in architectural engineering. When I had my idea thought through, I went back and worked on a design for the quilt with colors. At this point I think I’m ready to pick some fabrics and sew, but I often change my mind as I go.”
Cheryl tells us why she entered the Quilt Design Star™ competition: “When I entered the contest, I did it because I love challenges. What I didn’t know is how someone in the quilting world might be interested in what I was doing or how I was going about doing it. I work on the computer all the time, designing quilts, writing directions, and using e-mail but I don’t Tweet, have a blog, or website, and even though I have a Facebook account for my work, I have never been ‘on Facebook’. I know they are all good ways to communicate with other quilters, but I just can’t seem to tear myself away from the things I love to do to make time for the electronic stuff.”
“Here are 2 photos that show a little of what I see from my sewing studio. It’s a wonder I get anything done.”
