Welcome again to the Quilt Design Star™ 2012 Challenge 1 designer showcase!
Each of our Amateur category contestants must use the traditional Amish Star Block as inspiration for their quilt top. This block and many others can be found in McCall’s FREE Quilt Block Reference.
Sally Becker, a finalist in the Amateur category, inspired voters with “New Dawn”, her Quilt Design Star™ 2012 entry-round quilt created for our troops overseas.

Sally wrote to us, detailing her progress so far on Challenge 1 of the competition:
“First of all, I just want to tell everyone how fantastic all my family and friends have been through the process so far. They voted for me every day without any reminders and when they found out I have progressed to Challenge 1, they responded so positively I couldn’t be prouder.”
Sally is already hard at work on her new quilt!
“I have not made the Amish Star Block before, but to me it looks pretty straight-forward. As soon as I got the email yesterday that I was to proceed to Challenge 1, I printed out a copy of the block. Then I just looked at it and ideas were rolling around my head, so I developed a plan. Later on I got another brainstorm regarding the block, but I can’t divulge that until the top is finished and entered. Today I put the pattern pretty much out of my head and did a little shopping for some of the fabrics.” We can’t wait to see what you make with those gorgeous blue fabrics, Sally!
