Here is another Quilt Design Star™ 2012 Challenge 1 finalist showcase!
Remember, each of the Professional category finalists must use the traditional Storm at Sea Block as inspiration for their quilt top. The pattern for this block can be found in McCall’s FREE Quilt Block Reference for those who wish to follow along.
Professional category finalist Brandi Derr’s entry-round submission is titled “Kaleb’s Ladder”.
Brandi is familiar with the traditional Storm at Sea Block: “I have made the Storm at Sea Block before – just one quilt of it – it’s one of the hardest blocks I’ve done! Mostly I like to stick to squares, rectangles, and half-square triangles. I made my Storm at Sea quilt about a year and a half ago to thank my husband’s uncle and aunt for having us to visit at their beach house in Florida. I love the way the straight lines look curved!”
Brandi talks about her inspiration and fabric choices for her Challenge 1 quilt: “To design this quilt I sat down with my well-worn copy of 849 Traditional Patchwork Patterns by Susan Winter Mills, the printout of the block from the McCall’s Quilting website, my picture and plan of the quilt I made before, my graph paper, and my colored pencils. I also thought about who I might end up giving this quilt to, so I could decide on size and colors. I like what I’m coming up with, but I’m not finished yet!”
“I haven’t chosen any fabrics yet. I usually like to get my pattern all planned out and then go look for fabric so I’m sure to get enough of everything. But sometimes I’m just struck by fabric and have to come up with something to use it in! I’m pretty sure I’m going to use blue because it just goes with the name of the block – I can’t seem to separate them. However, I keep picturing purple, too. Maybe I’ll use both!” We can’t wait to see which colors you choose, Brandi. Good luck!
