The 2012 McCall’s Quilt Design Star™ contest is off to a great start! For the first time, amateur quilt designers are competing strictly against each other, and up-and-coming professional designers are competing in a separate contest track. Don’t let the term “professional” scare you…for our contest, a pro is anyone who has ever received monetary compensation for an original quilt design. If you’ve made money by self-publishing a pattern, making a quilt for a fabric company, or teaching a class based on your quilt design at a local shop, you’re a pro!
To enter in either category, post a photo of an original quilt, designed by you, anytime now through April 29, and fill out an easy online form. Public voting on the qualifying round of quilts begins May 1, 2012. After 3 design Challenges, we’ll be crowning TWO new Quilt Design Stars™, one from each designer group. Grand prizes include a sewing machine (a Pfaff® quilt expression™ 4.0 with quilter’s toolbox in the professional group and a Viking® Sapphire™ 875 Quilt in the amateur group) and $500 cash to the winner of each group. Winning quilts will also be featured in McCall’s Quilting magazine. Check out contest rules for pros and amateurs, and enter now!
Prizes:
- All contest entrants will receive a link to download a handy Quilt Designers’ Easy Patterning Guide PDF.
- All contest entrants selected as finalists to participate in Challenge 1 will receive a prize package of quilters’ goodies.
- All Challenge 1 finalists selected to participate in Challenge 2 will receive an additional prize package of quilters’ goodies.
- All Challenge 2 finalists selected to participate in Challenge 3 will receive an AccuQuilt® Go! Baby.

I could use a new machine I haven’t had a new one in 20 years and mine is about to be thrown in the trash! What an awesome prize!
Yeah for separating the two this time! Wishing I could participate again as I so loved the challenge. Good luck to all that enter!!
What a great prize I would love to win fingers crossed
It is a great idea to separate the amateur and professional categories and define what is indicated by professional. I think this will get more participation by amateurs like me. Wonderful prizes.
Alway willing to accept a prize no matter what it is. It would always be used.
I’m so glad that there is an amateur category. This has been so much fun .I learn from each thing I have done in quilting .Never knew there was so much out there in the quilting world until I started trying to quilt about 6 months ago, at that time I never had heard of a layer cake or jelly roll except to eat.
