Quilters Donate Their Time

Our office was graced recently with the presence of Ami Simms from the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI). Our sister magazine, Quiltmaker, has blogged about their staff’s contributions to the AAQI, so I thought I’d give you a peek at what our editors are working on.

Alzheimer’s has a personal meaning for Laura Roberts, Assistant Editor. Her mother was afflicted with the disease, and she watched her “go away” before her eyes. Laura created a 2-sided quilt, one side for before Alzheimer’s, and one for after.

Our Associate Editor, Sherri Driver, is working on her quilt as well. She used pre-cut shapes covered with tulle, which obscured the edges of her shapes.

Alzheimer’s is such a personal disease, and since quilting is a personal art, the two go together perfectly. Please consider contributing to, or bidding for a quilt in the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative. Lives will be touched by your contribution.

  1. Ami Simms says:

What wonderful quilts! I can’t wait to see them in person! Thanks so much for encouraging others to participate in the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative!

  2. Diane says:

Those are two awesome little quilts! From personal experience, I can share how wonderful it feels to do something you enjoy doing and have it turn into $$ for research to end this horrible disease! No big corporate entity where your dollars go to salaries and overhead – just a big volunteer organization where your dollars go straight to research. Try it! You’ll like it!

  3. I was at this session, and it was a wonderful time! We all shared our fabrics, knowledge and equipment and came together to make wonderful little quilts for a wonderful cause. Great work, ladies!!

  4. Kathy Kennedy-Dennis says:

Thank you so much for your articles and continued support of the AAQI. It was fun to see your quilts begin to take form last August, and it is a joy to see them now. KK-D, member, Board of Directors of the AAQI

  5. Gay Ousley says:

Thank you for putting the AAQI in the spotlight! Those of us with quilts in the exhibit appreciate your help in spreading the word!

  6. niki says:

Thanks for making quilts and encouraging others to also make quilts for the AAQI. I am sure your quilts will help us raise a lot of money! Thank you again. Niki Board of Director of the AAQI

  7. As an AAQI quilter and someone who has or had 15 members of her family face this horrible disease, I cannot tell you how much it means to me to have members of your staff support, make, and donate quilts to AAQI. May it encourage others to also make and donate quilts and to purchase many more quilts !
