African violets basking in artificial light

I love plants, and it’s been a real loss to me that I’ve been so much less successful gardening here in Colorado than I was as a Pennsylvania resident. Potted plants have become my fall-back position, and I was thrilled when the McCall’s team moved to new offices recently, because I now have a west-facing window. I thought my thumb would turn green again for sure! But my African violet, which I’ve been trying to get to bloom for years now, didn’t perk up until I followed associate editor Sherri Driver’s sage advice…stick it under a light! As soon as I tucked it under my Daylight lamp, it started setting buds. It’s now in full bloom, and Sherri just gave me 2 more baby violets from her own collection, so now I have a whole family, happily growing on my desk. It’s not a real garden, but it brightens up every day here in my office! Hope your spring includes lots of green, flowering things.

Help…. I just noticed that McCalls Quilting website is all changed. I was giving reference to a quilt that I made for a church raffle. I went to get the link to the WebBonus pattern for the Nines and Vines quilt, but I can’t find it any more.

Gail, we are still in the process of migrating the older content from our site to this new, improved version. In the meantime, I’ll pass your request on to someone who can provide the pattern to you directly. Thanks for your patience!

Kathy, I have a new african violet, but we have solor screens. I had forgotten about using a lamp! I will add this pretty violet to my sewing room. Thanks, Andrea
